Late Stages of Pregnancy

So, it seems that I am constantly surrounded by pregnancy and birth working at Starbucks.  Not only have several of my co-workers recently had babies, but some are expecting.  I don't get hot flashes, but I have to relate on some level as I am about to see the birth of my first musical on the stage.  Originally, I conceived of Lonestar, Texas: A Popcorn Throwing Rock Country Musical five years ago while attending theater school at UCLA.  It was an act of spite to write the play, as I was not cast in the big musical for the year.  I felt the need to prove to myself that I had something better up my sleeve.  Ever since then, what I created has been an obsession in the back of my head for five years.  It seems an act of fate that I have happened upon a small gang of talented actors to make it all happen.

Like my expectant friends, it is hard not to be overcome by anticipation, fear and hope about what will come out of this project.  This is probably the first show outside of school that I have done much leg work on.  I have a laundry list of things already that I would do differently in the pre-production process, and I am sure that my team sees me as far from a perfect, well-seasoned, producer yet.  Nevertheless, we have made it to rehearsals, and we have smacked the bull on his hind.  All we can do is ride out the fun, and white-knuckle all the way to closing down the show.

It is an interesting experience planning a production after watching so many of my friends do the same.  Many made it look difficult, and some made it look effortless.  I aspire to the latter, and hope to learn how to make the experience of the production amazing.  I think a truly talented producer has the ability to make the experience seem as magical for those involved as it is for those who watch a performance.  This is just the beginning.  If we can pull this off, watch out Austin, LA, New York.  The seeds of an oak will be planted, or perhaps the birth of a child with a very expensive college tuition fee.
